Alan Kennedy was born on August 31, 1954, in Sunderland, England. He was spotted by scouts of northeast rivals Newcastle United as a schoolboy, and made his first team debut for the Magpies in September 1972.

As a 19-year-old Kennedy played for Newcastle United in the 1974 FA Cup Final, but ended it with a runners-up medal, losing 3-0 to Liverpool.

An attacking left-back, Kennedy scored nine times in 158 appearances for Newcastle before signing for Bob Paisley’s Liverpool for £330,000 in August 1978.

The Reds star scored in the 1981 League Cup Final against Wembley, and was part of the side that triumphed against West Ham in the replay a few days later.

Always reserving his best performances for the big occasion, Kennedy scored an unforgettable winner in Paris against Real Madrid, to help the Reds win the 1981 European Cup Final.

In 1984, Kennedy scored the decisive penalty kick in the shoot-out to ensure Liverpool beat Italians Roma on home soil to lift the European Cup yet again.

The Liverpool legend won two England caps, starting against Northern Ireland and Wales in 1984.

Alan Kennedy is one of the most decorated players of his generation, winning four League Cups, four Division One titles and two European Cups.
