William Arthur "Billy" Bonds MBE was born on September 17, 1946 in Woolwich, London. He was nicknamed Bonzo.

After 95 games for Charlton Athletic, he joined West Ham United in 1967 where he was to spend the next 21 years. By the time he hung up his boots he had made a club record 663 league appearances for the Hammers and scored 48 league goals.

As captain, he led West Ham to two FA Cup wins, in 1975 and 1980. In 1975 they defeated Fulham 2-0, with two goals from Alan Taylor. In 1980 they overcame the mighty Arsenal 1-0 with a goal from Trevor Brooking, and remain the last club to have won the famous trophy while in the second tier of the football league.

Bonds picked up runners-up medals in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1976 and the League Cup in 1981

On 6 February 2019, it was announced that the East Stand at The London Stadium will be renamed the Billy Bonds Stand
