Ian Rush was born on October 20, 1961, in St Asaph, Wales. After making a name for himself as a goalscorer for Chester City, he was sold to Liverpool in April 1980 for £300,000, a record fee at the time that had been paid for a teenager.

The youngster became a full Welsh international before he’d been handed his first start for Liverpool, debuting against Scotland on May 21, 1980. Sixteen years later he ended his career with Wales with a record of 28 goals in 73 caps.

After landing the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1983, Rush was named PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year in 1984.

In that prolific 1983/84 campaign, Rush scored an incredible 47 goals in 65 games. It was his finest ever season.

As a Liverpool player Rush won five First Division titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups and two European Cups.

The Welsh hot shot was Liverpool’s leading goalscorer in nine different seasons between 1981 and 1994.

Rush is Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer, netting 346 goals in 660 matches, during two different spells on Merseyside.

The Liverpool legend is the second highest goalscorer in FA Cup history with 49 goals to his name. Five of those strikes came in FA Cup finals.
