Tottenham Hotspur were founded in 1882, and play at the 36,310-capacity White Hart Lane in north London.

They have won two league championships – in 1960-61 and 1950-51 – eight FA Cups, four league cups, one Anglo Italian League Cup, two UEFA Cups and one Cup Winners Cup.

They won the FA Cup in 1901 when they were still a non-league club and remain the only non-league club to have done so.

In the 1960-61 season, they became the first English team to win a post-war league and FA Cup double and in 1963 they became the first British club to win a European trophy – the European Cup Winners' Cup. They also won the inaugural UEFA Cup in 1972.

Bill Nicholson was their manager when they won the double. The team he built included such legendary players as Danny Blanchflower, John White, Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones, Jimmy Greaves and Terry Medwin.

Nicholson rebuilt the ageing team in the mid-Sixties with players such as Alan Gilzean, Mike England, Alan Mullery, Terry Venables, Joe Kinnear and Cyril Knowles. They went on to beat Chelsea to win the 1967 FA Cup Final and finish third in the league.

Steve Perryman holds the record for the highest number of appearances, having played 854 games for the club between 1969 and 1986. Jimmy Greaves holds the club goalscoring record with 266 goals in 380 league, cup and European appearances.

Spurs made worldwide news when they signed Argentine World Cup winners Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa in 1978. The duo was instrumental in the 1981 FA Cup win over Manchester City. The latter scored one of Wembley's most famous goals in the replay, which Spurs won 3-2. They also won the FA Cup the following year, overcoming QPR in a replay with a penalty from Glenn Hoddle.

In 1988 Spurs manager Terry Venables broke the British transfer record when he paid £2 million to Newcastle for Paul Gascoigne. Gazza scored a memorable goal in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, when he beat David Seaman with a free-kick from 30 yards. His final was to end in tears, when he was stretchered off with a leg injury. Spurs went on to beat Nottingham Forest 2-1.

Harry Redknapp took Spurs into the Champions League for the first time when they finished fourth in the 2009-10 Premiership. In their campaign the following season they produced memorable wins over both Inter Milan and AC Milan, before succumbing to Real Madrid.
