After its secession from Yugoslavia, the newly formed Croatia national team entered the FIFA World Rankings in 125th place in March 1994. Since 1994, Croatia have qualified for every major tournament with the exception of Euro 2000 and the 2010 World Cup.

In the World Cup, Croatia has finished 2nd once (2018) and 3rd on two occasions (1998, 2022), securing three World Cup medals.

The team's colours reference two national symbols: the Croatian checkerboard and the country's tricolour. The team are referred to as the Vatreni (Blazers) and Kockasti (Checkered Ones).

Current captain, Luka Modric, holds the record for most caps with 174 games.

Davor Suker is Croatia's top all-time goalscorer with 45 international goals for his country between 1991 and 2002.
