Man City were founded in 1880 as St Mark's (West Gorton), becoming Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. They play at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, which has a capacity of 47,805.
They are also known as City, the Citizens, or the Blues, and the unofficial club anthem is Blue Moon.
They have won the First Division twice, in 1936-37 and 1967-68, the FA Cup five times, in 1904, 1934, 1956, 1969 and 2011, the League Cup twice, in 1970 and 1976 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970.
The club's first successful period came in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup. The manager at the time was Malcolm Allison who believed that by adopting the red and black stripes of AC Milan would bring them luck. It appeared to work as they won the 1969 FA Cup Final, 1970 League Cup Final and the 1970 European Cup Winners' Cup Final in red and black stripes as opposed to the club's home kit of sky blue.
At the time of this heyday, the club regularly featured the legendary trio of Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.
The club’s record league victory is 13-3 over Lincoln City on March 23, 1895. Their record home attendance of 84,569 against Stoke City on March 3, 1934 is the highest home attendance of all time in Britain.
In 2008, Manchester City was purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group for £210 million and received considerable financial investment.
Since the takeover, the club's success boomed. The club has now won six domestic league titles- the first coming in 2012. Under the management of Pep Guardiola they won the Premier League in 2018 becoming the only Premier League team to attain 100 points in a single season. In 2019, they won four trophies, completing an unprecedented sweep of all domestic trophies in England and becoming the first English men's team to win the domestic treble.
In 2022-23 they won another treble, this time the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup, becoming only the second club to do so after their city rivals Manchester United.
