QPR was formed in 1882, when the team known as St Jude's merged with Christchurch Rangers. The resulting team was called Queens Park Rangers, because most of the players came from the Queen's Park area of Northwest London.

In 1966-67, QPR won the Division Three championship and became the first Third Division club to win the League Cup on March 4, 1967, beating West Bromwich Albion 3-2. Trailing by two goals, Rangers fought back to lift the trophy. First Roger Morgan scored with a header, then Rodney Marsh went on a mazy run, eluding tackles, and shot in off the post past keeper Dick Sheppard. In the closing minutes, QPR centre-half Ron Hunt went on a forward run and as he challenged the keeper for the ball it ran loose to Mark Lazarus to score the winning goal. Mike Keen lifted the cup to thousands of cheering Rangers fans. It remains the only major trophy the Superhoops have lifted.

QPR's most successful league season came in 1975-76 when they finished second in the First Division. Having completed their 42 games they sat at the top of the table leading Liverpool by one point. Liverpool travelled to Wolverhampton Wanderers and duly beat them 3-1 to take the title.

QPR's side of the Seventies is regarded as possibly one of the best English teams not to win a trophy, and certainly one of the most attractive. This is due to players of the calibre of Stan Bowles and Gerry Francis who graced Loftus Road in that era.

QPR's highest attendance is 35,353, which came against Leeds United on April 27, 1974 in Division One.

Rodney Marsh holds the record for the most goals in one season for the Rs; 44, in 1966-67.

The record transfer fees paid are an estimated £12.5 million to Anzhi Makhachkala for Christopher Samba, January 2013
