With only hours to go in this year’s Premier League transfer window- we’re looking back at some of the greatest signings that went to the wire…

Carlos Tevez - Corinthians to West Ham

One of the most bizarre signings that took place on deadline day in 2006, was the dual signing of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to West Ham. Mascherano didn’t live up to expectation at the club, and soon moved to Liverpool- but Tevez soon became a club legend. With only a few games left in the season and West Ham sitting in the relegation zone, Tevez almost singlehandedly saved the club from relegation after scoring seven goals in 10 games- including one on the very last day of the season.

Wayne Rooney- Everton to Manchester United

In 2004, 18-year old Wayne Rooney became the most expensive teenager in Premier League history when he made the move from boyhood club Everton to Manchester United for £20 million- but soon proved he was worth every penny! After 559 appearances, Rooney became the club’s top scorer and won 16 trophies including five Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 2008.

Luis Suarez- Ajax to Liverpool

Kenny Dalglish snapped up the Uruguayan striker for just £22.8 million from Ajax in 2011, on the same day they bought Andy Carroll for nearly £15 million more! Suarez’s time at Liverpool didn’t come without controversy, but he quickly rose to hero status within the fanbase for his sublime 82 goals in just 133 appearances. His move to La Liga side Barcelona in 2014 gave Liverpool a sales profit of over £42 million.

Ashley Cole- Arsenal to Chelsea

Potentially one of the biggest bargains in transfer history. After the controversy of setting up secret “tapping up” meetings in 2005, Cole very nearly didn’t make the iconic move from Arsenal to Stamford Bridge. Eventually in 2006, Chelsea finally sent William Gallas and £5 million to Arsenal and soon made their money back. With nine seasons at the club, Cole won nine trophies with Chelsea including a Premier League victory, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League.

Dele Alli- MK Dons to Tottenham Hotspur

As one of Tottenham’s key players, it’s strange to think that Dele only made his Premier League debut in 2015. Spurs splashed out £5 million for the teenager, who quickly became instrumental in Tottenham’s recent success. At the age of just 23, Dele has already scored 42 goals in 131 appearances for the club. With very high expectations on his shoulders- we can’t wait to see what he will do next.

Claude Makelele – Real Madrid to Chelsea

The Frenchman’s move to London in 2003 was a shock to Madrid fans and players. He was regarded as one of Madrid’s most important players on the pitch to most- but owners at the time didn’t believe he fit in with their “Galacticos” image. Chelsea paid just £16 million for the defensive midfielder, who ended up making 217 appearances for the club and helped to lead them to back-to-back Premier League titles.
